Digital / Jury Slides

Digital/Jury slides are essential to every artist who promotes his/her art through galleries and shows. This is a focal point of our business at azadphoto. Our approach assures you’ll have what you need, when you need it. Through our ongoing consultation with jury members at several major shows and galleries, we have developed extremely effective techniques for presenting your work in its best light. We at azadphoto are confident of two things:

1) Quality of slides / digital images can enhance or detract from the impression your art makes when presented to a jury. No matter how beautiful your work is, a poor slide / digital presentation can fail to convince a jury that they need to include your work in their show. On the other hand, showing your work in crisp, clean, nicely composed and well-lit images will show the jury that you are a professional who pays attention to detail and wants to present their work in its ideal form.

2) What we produce for you will show your work in its best light. Our photos will always do justice to your art, and can be relied upon to enhance your professional reputation and heighten interest for any artistic venue. Count on it. We do superior work.

What You Receive

I do six to eight single small to medium sized items for digital images or jury slides on a simple background. Pricing includes one hour of my studio time, adjusted high and low resolution digital images on a CD and/or 2 slide originals from adjusted digital images or a roll of slides and processing.   I change cameras on the exact same setup and lighting using digital and slide film.

Digitals (Zapplication)

If you order digital images, you receive a CD formatted for any computer. There are at least two folders on the disc. Some folders end with the word tif, the others end with the word web. The tif folders contain high resolution 4"x6" 300 dpi images, suitable for print output. These images are excellent for making prints at most labs equipped for digital printing. The images in the web folders are 6"x9" 72 dpi, and are intended for computer viewing and emailing. You can order other sizes at additional cost. If you need these digital images uploaded to your Zapp account, I provide this service at $5 per image if from my existing digital file or $12 per image if from a slide or from your digital file.

Adjusted Slides from Digital

I will resize and format the adjusted digital image to have 2 slides made of each image. These adjusted original slides will be yours. The convenience of having digital slides made is that your file is now archived at Colorado Camera (866 265-6226). They can make your duplicates from this file. The first slide is $2.00, duplicates are $1.00 per image (5 minimum). You have the right to make as many duplicates as you wish at this or any other lab.

Film Slides

When you have slides shot by me, I bracket four different exposures of each different setup in 1/2 f-stop increments. You receive the best two exposures. Generally, the darker slide is better for projection, ie. jury slides, and the lighter slide is better for viewing or offset printing. I keep the other exposures as emergency back-up and for my own use as self promotion on cards, the web, etc.   Again, I strongly suggest that you never send original slides for jurying. I include information with each order on a world class slide duplicating laboratory, Photo Craft 800-441-3873. You have the right to make as many duplicates as you wish at this or any other lab.

What Equipment and Why

My equpiment has been chosen with one goal in mind: to give you the best possible photos of your artistic creations. I use 35mm, digital cameras, monolight studio strobe lighting, a Macintosh computer, and various scanners and printers.

Most of the photography I do is with 35mm professional Pentax equipment. The reason is simple ... most of my clients need digital and/or slides and 35mm yields sufficient quality using modern technology to yield excellent results for up to full page advertising or high quality postcards. I have had several of my shots used successfully as full page illustrations and cover shots in national magazines. Using 35mm is also economical for the client.

I use a Pentax *istD for digital photography. This is a state of the art 6 megapixel professional camera.

The lighting equipment I use is studio monolight strobes with modeling lights. I use between one and five of these on each shot as needed. I also have a complete selection of diffusers and other light modifying devices to achieve the best possible effect for each shot. Since jewelry is my area of greatest expertise, my lighting of metal and stones is as good as it gets.

I use Macintosh computers with all the latest graphic design software (Quark, Photoshop, etc.). I also have an Epson flatbed scanner with Transparency adapter, Polaroid 4000 35mm scanner, Epson 1280 Photo printer.

Advertising Photography

Advertising photography takes care and perfection to a higher level. While digital/jury shots are generally usable in print projects, there can be some differences. The viewing life of a jury slide is 5-10 seconds, not enough time to pick apart either the subject or the photography. A photograph for a card, flyer, or other advertising medium will be scrutinized by many more people and for a longer period of time.

This type of photography takes more time on your part and mine to achieve this level of perfection. Because it is more time consuming, it is more expensive.

A single shot with several pieces which requires a lot of arranging on special backgrounds with props may take an hour or more. Less complex group shots may take only 15 minutes. Keep in mind that the shots normally called “jury slides” may be fully usable for advertising.

Backgrounds

I have an extensive selection of background materials. I use roll materials in all the basic neutral colors: blacks, grays, tans, and whites, as well as some stronger colors. I have several different silk-screened fades which blend from white to gray/black and to a variety of colors. These are very fragile and are easily scratched (rendering them unusable) and are, therefore, sometimes billable if scratching is unavoidable.

I also keep a variety of stone slabs and various colors and sizes of sand. Other backgrounds include a variety of fabrics, special papers, foam, textured glass, reflective surfaces, and metallic surfaces. I often use background materials and props provided by my clients. While I do use some backgrounds more than others, you will find that I am open to suggestions and art direction.

Copyright Information

The area of intellectual property is the most controversial aspect of my business. The simple fact is that any photographer whom you pay in cash or trade owns the rights to the use of the pictures. This is a matter of law. Each individual photographer determines what usage is included in the agreed upon price for the service. This can vary from your receiving a print, slide or digital image and not even having the right to make a single copy to having unrestricted use.

My policy for the use of photography done by me is one of the most liberal among “professional photographers.”

Below is a list of included and restricted uses of my photography. The restricted uses are based on my past experiences and there are usage fees for these. It is also possible to negotiate additional/different usage at the time of the shoot.

All photography by azadphoto is covered by the copyright laws of the United States. Rights to usage of these photographs includes the following:

  • Any/all usage of photographs is conditioned upon payment in full.
  • Any/all uses must carry a photo credit (Photography by azadphoto.com, Photo © azadphoto.com, or Photo by azadphoto.com).
  • Photographs are sold with photographic, xerographic, internet and editorial use released.
  • Photographs used in offset printing and advertising may be subject to usage fees, unless specifically released.
  • Offset printing done through azadphoto carries no usage fees.
  • Advertising produced through azadphoto carries no usage fees.
  • Sample usage fee is $25 per image for having up to 2500 postcards printed other than through Azad.
  • These terms apply to work done after 1/1/2004. Please contact me with specific questions.
